Our Heritage
Originally called Terminus, the city of Atlanta was founded in 1845 at the Zero Mile Post of the Western & Atlantic Railroad (today Underground Atlanta). The “W&A R.R.” provided the new city with an important linkage north to Chattanooga, TN (with linkages to the Midwest) and south to the port of Savannah, Ga. The Western & Atlantic Railroad was a primary supply line for the Confederacy during the Civil War. After the war, the W&ARR became an important resource to bring the materials and people that fueled the growth of the new city of Atlanta. Portions of the Western & Atlantic railroad line remain in operation today. Western & Atlantic Development was inspired by the powerful engine that fueled the growth of Metro Atlanta and connected it to other regions throughout the Southeast.
